How to use the invoice generator

  1. 1Enter your business details and the client's, with GSTINs if you are both registered.
  2. 2Choose the GST treatment: within-state (CGST+SGST), across states (IGST), or no GST if you are unregistered.
  3. 3Add line items with quantity, rate and the GST slab for each; totals update live.
  4. 4Add payment notes — bank details or UPI ID — and download the PDF.

What makes an invoice GST-correct

The mistake that gets invoices bounced by a client's accountant is not the maths — it is the split. GST on a within-state sale must appear as two equal halves, CGST and SGST; the identical total on an across-state sale appears as one line of IGST. Same money, different labels, and input-credit claims fail when the labels are wrong. The GST-treatment selector above drives the split through the totals and onto the PDF automatically.

Beyond the split, a compliant tax invoice carries a serial number, date, both parties' names, addresses and GSTINs, a description of goods or services with quantity and rate, the taxable value, the rate and amount of tax, and the total in words — every one of which this generator prints. For unregistered sellers the same layout without tax lines is a 'bill of supply' in spirit, and the no-GST option produces exactly that.

Round-off is the small convention that marks an invoice as done by someone who has seen real ones: Indian invoices round the grand total to the rupee and show the adjustment as its own line, which the generator computes and prints when it is non-zero.

For freelancers, before and after registration

If your turnover is under the GST registration threshold, you invoice without tax lines — pick 'No GST' and the document stays clean and honest rather than showing 0% theatre. Clients' accounts teams accept these routinely from unregistered vendors; what they need is your PAN on file, not a GSTIN you don't have.

Once registered, the slab per line item matters: services commonly sit at 18%, goods vary across 5, 12, 18 and 28. Mixed invoices are normal — each line carries its own rate here, and the tax total aggregates correctly. Whether it splits as CGST+SGST or IGST depends only on whether your state and the client's differ.

Serial numbering is a legal requirement worth building a habit around: consecutive, unique within a financial year. A simple INV-2026-001 pattern in the invoice-number field, incremented each time, satisfies it — and makes your own bookkeeping findable.

Why in-browser generation is the right design for invoices

An invoice bundles your client list, your rates and your revenue — competitive information by any definition. Every hosted invoice tool stores that bundle on its servers as its business model; this one cannot, structurally: the PDF is assembled by a library running in your browser tab, and the download comes from your device's memory. No account, no cloud copy, no mining.

That design also means no artificial limits — generate one invoice or a hundred, no watermarks, no 'free plan'. The trade-off is equally honest: there is no stored history here. Keep your copies; the file downloads to your machine and that is the only place it exists.

Pair it with the rest of the site: the amount in words comes from the same engine as the Number to Words page, receipts for rent claims come from the Rent Receipt Generator, and if a client portal caps upload sizes, Compress PDF brings the file under the limit — all locally.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use CGST+SGST versus IGST?

By geography: buyer and seller in the same state means CGST + SGST (half the rate each); different states means IGST at the full rate. The total tax is identical — only the labelling changes, and claims fail when it is wrong.

Can I invoice without GST?

Yes — if you are not GST-registered (under the turnover threshold), select 'No GST' and issue the invoice without tax lines. Clients accept these from unregistered vendors; they will want your PAN for their records.

Is this invoice format legally compliant?

It carries the fields a tax invoice requires — serial number, date, parties with GSTINs, itemised values, tax rate and amount, and the total in words. Businesses with special requirements (e-invoicing mandates, HSN codes at scale) layer those on top; for freelancers and small businesses this format is the standard.

Why is there a round-off line?

Indian invoices conventionally round the grand total to the whole rupee and disclose the adjustment. The generator computes it automatically and prints the line only when it is non-zero.

Where is my invoice data stored?

Nowhere — that is the point. The PDF is built in your browser and downloads from local memory; no server ever sees your client names, rates or totals. Keep your own copies, because no history exists here.
